Loka is a Sanskrit word for "world". In Hindu cosmology this term is applied to fourteen worlds, or planes, seven of which are higher (vyahrtis) and seven lower (patalas). . They are bhurloka, bhuvarloka, svarloka, maharloka, janarloka, tapaloka, and satyaloka above, and atala, vitala, sutala, rasatala, talatala, mahatala, and patala below.
