To G. Soobiah Chetty1 Ootacamund, July 17, 1883 My dear Shabaya, Have you ceased your lamentations? I hope so. Master told me it would be well for yourself and others could you come here to pass some time of your vacation. I think you wrote to me once about being able to do so. If you can do, you will be with me the whole day, for the General’s2 family are as much Hindoo as yourself & very fond of natives, speaking the language as yourself. They say they will be glad to see you, and who knows whether you may not be able to find something good for yourself in the shape of a better official position.3

Context and background

Mr. Jinarajadasa provided these notes about this letter:

Transcribed from the original at Adyar. This brief note comes in a letter sent by H.P.B. on 17 July 1883, from Ootacamund, Nilgiri Hills, to Mr G. Soobiah Chetty in Madras, in which she sends him an invitation to visit her in the hills. The main part of the letter refers to Mr G. Muttuswamy Chetty, a judge of the Small Causes Court of Madras, and father of Mr G. Soobiah Chetty. Mr Muttuswamy Chetty received in Tamil a letter, posted at Amritsar, from the Master K.H., the translation of which, I am informed, was as follows: ‘Sinnett’s paper is the only saviour for India. You must work towards it. Koot Hoomi.’ On receipt of this, Mr Muttuswamy Chetty tried among his friends to raise something towards the capital required for The Phoenix newspaper (see Letter 14). He was not, however, successful.[2]

Physical description of letter

The original of this letter is preserved at the Theosophical Society, Adyar, Chennai, India.

Publication history

This letter was published in 1919 as Letter 35 in the first edition of Letters from the Masters of the Wisdom, 1881-1888, later known as the First Series.[3] It seems not to have been published previously , but a facsimile appeared in The Theosophist, Vol. 57, November 1935, pages 145-148.

Commentary about this letter

Mr. Chetty and his brother Narasimhalu Chetty met Master Morya in his physical body even before the founding of the Theosophical Society, when the Mahatma visited Madras in 1874.[4]
