This letter is Letter No. 5 in Mrs. Holloway and the Mahatmas. Master K. H. warns H. P. Blavatsky that Laura C. Holloway must stop stop trying to console ghostly spirits, as she is doing herself harm.

Page 1 transcription, image, and notes

I regret that both yourself and Sinnett should, albeit unintentionally have inflicted useless & most cruel suffering upon any being – least of all upon one so gentle & tender hearted & so well disposed to all of you. You were asked to warn her & warn Mr Sinnett; instead of which with your usual careless & flippant way of transacting serious business, you entrusted my letter to Mr Finch without instructing him beforehand as to the privacy of its contents – meant for yourself & in answer to your request. Thereupon Mr. S. without giving a thought to the danger of an unexpected shock to such a highly nervous & sensitive being as he has himself found Mrs H. to be, lets her read what is said of her & even now thinks that he has [done] nothing wrong. He ought to have asked your permission, at least, before he showed Mrs. H a letter addressed to neither of them.

I really do not see what I can do now, if – as you say, she refuses to believe what you tell her. You may give her, as a message coming directly from me, the assurance that she has entirely misunderstood & misinterpreted the spirit of my warning; let her know, that it was most earnest & sympathetic, promoted by a sincere good will, and a desire to help her - on Dj. K's part, who drew my attention to it. “Mrs H's meddling in this business” simply referred to her having ought to do with the bhûtas & shells. Tell her or still better send her this note, since nothing seems likely to reassure her except a message from one of us – that she has nothing at all that anyone of us could disapprove of, except doing injury to herself. She labors under the very kind but erroneous & injurious notion that since she has done it [consoling the elementaries] all her life – she cannot be doing wrong in continuing to do so. Total error! She has, she does wrong, a most serious one to herself: for she has thereby been for years systematically destroying her health. This relationship during the course of which the unclean shells have been constantly absorbing a part of her vitality brought her to become the highly nervous & sickly sensitive. The more they are encouraged the more serious it becomes for her, & they may even kill her if she heeds us not. And let her be impressed with the fact that whenever she thinks she sees a chela appearing with, or seeming to take an interest, or show any connection with those astral vampires – she yields simply to the cunning & crafty ways of the shells. No gelukpa chela ever meddles with the earth bound remnants of humanity, nor will any of our chela – high or low – encourage such an intercourse by his presence.

Comfort & console the poor suffering heart; assure her that tho' neither of us "Masters" can have as yet direct dealings with her, for she is a woman as yet uninitiated & unprepared by a special & severe training & physiological re-formation – yet we are quite ready to watch over & communicate with her by intermediate agencies. If she will but have even the trust in our good-will & friendly interest that the child has in those of the parent who warns it of unsuspected danger – all will be well. Not only happiness & knowledge but safety be in the course I have pointed at. The golden chalice is held to her lips – let her not dash it to the ground. She talks of going back to America! For humanity's sake, if not for her own, she should live & work, and, if needs be – suffer.

K.H.
