Rukmini in the 1940s

It's Leap Day, and that is the birthday of Rukmini Devi Arundale (1904-1986). She was best known as a dancer and educator, and as wife of George S. Arundale, Theosophical Society President. Her interest in traditional Indian dance led to a huge revival of interest in Indian arts and crafts.

In the political realm, she championed championed animal rights and vegetarianism, and for 10 years was a member of the upper house of India's parliament. She was awarded many prizes and honors, and is considered to be one of "100 People Who Shaped India". Happy birthday, Rukmini!
