Oracle is a word derived from the Latin verb ōrāre "to speak". In Classical Antiquity, it referred to a priestess or priest through whom a deity is believed to speak, giving wise counsel or prophetic predictions of the future. The word may be used in a more general sense to the place or shrine in which the deity reveals its wisdom through such a person.
