Shunyata (devanāgarī: शून्यता śūnyatā) is a Sanskrit term that is translated into English as emptiness, openness, thusness, etc. In Buddhism, shunyata refers to the absence of inherent existence in all phenomena, and it is complimentary to the concepts of no-self (Sk. anātman) and dependent origination (Sk. nidāna). The exact definition emptiness varies from one Buddhist tradition to another.
