After leaving the Universty School in his native town, Nottingham, he spent several years in the study of modern languages and literature in France, Germany, and Switzerland. Soon, thereafter, he accepted the position of master of modern languages at the Pomfret School, Connecticut. With the establishment of Point Loma, where his artist father, Joseph Fussell, Sr., and his brother were already living, he made frequent visits there beginning in 1904.
