Maud's mother, Mrs. Marion MacCarthy, became a member of the Blavatsky Lodge in London on December 28, 1895;[1] and Maud followed suit on March 3, 1900.[2] Maud's first husband, William Walter Mann, also joined the Theosophical Society on 1903.[3]
By 1915 she had become "a traveling companion of Annie Besant in India and was one of the first Western authorities on Indian classical music."[4] She was a collaborator with composer and Theosophist John Foulds for many years. They met in 1915, and were married in 1932.
