Aeon, also spelt as eon, is a Latin transliteration from the Greek αἰών (ho aion). It originally means "life" and/or "being", and it is in this latter sense that the word is applied in Gnosticism. Alternatively, it is used to mean a finite period of time or "age", similar to the Sanskrit word Kalpa. Sometimes, especially in Christianity, the word is translated as eternity.
Aeons in Gnosticism
In many Gnostic systems, the various angelic beings emanated from God are called Aeons. These emanations are differently named, classified, and described, in the different Gnostic systems.
