These terms are from the Pāli (or Pāḷi) language, which was used to write many of the earliest extant Buddhist scriptures, as collected in the Pāḷi Canon or Tipitaka, and as the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism. For additional resources on the Pāli language see:
