William Walker Atkinson (1862-1935) is best known for authorship of The Kybalion and numerous works on Yoga Philosophy, New Thought, mental powers, and Theosophical topics.
Occasionally he is confused with William J. Atkinson, a doctor from Missouri who wrote for occult periodicals.
Personal life
Atkinson was born in Baltimore in late 1862 to William C. Atkinson and his wife Emma Lyal Mittnacht Atkinson, who later had a daughter Elma.[1] His father and grandfather were successful merchants, owning grocery stores; they were engaged in civic activities such as the school board, fire department, and Whig political party. As a teenager William Jr. worked as a clerk in the grocery.[2]
In October 1889 he married Margaret Foster Black (1871-1950) of Beverly, New Jersey. Their first son, Joseph, was born in 1891 and died within a few months. A second son, William Courtney Atkinson, was born in 1894 and lived until 1984.
Atkinson studied law in Pennsylvania and passed the bar exam in 1894.
He died on November 22, 1932 in Pasadena, California at age 69.
Involvement with Theosophical Society
As early as 1885, Atkinson corresponded with early Society leaders Thomas Moore Johnson and Elliott B. Page.[3] He became a member of the American Theosophical Society on January 28, 1903, while living in Chicago, according the records of the international Theosophical Society based in Adyar, Chennai, India.[4] References to Atkinson or any of his known pseudonyms are infrequent in the magazines of the Society, but it is clear that he maintained a relationship, both as a writer and as a lecturer.
In January, 1916, a notice appeared in The Messenger:
Mr. Elias Gewurz has placed with us, as a donation, a number of copies of his latest book, THE HIDDEN TREASURES OF THE ANCIENT QABALAH. We in turn are making a gift of one copy to each of the newly-chartered lodges as a nucleus for its library yet to be. Return thanks and appreciation to Mr. Gewurz are here made.[5]
It was further reported in June of that year that Elias Gewurz donated "his latest book, published at Krotona to the library of the Dallas Lodge.[6]
The Hidden Treasures of the Ancient Qabalah was published in 1915 by the Theosophical Book Concern at the Krotona headquarters of the American Theosophical Society. It was introduced with this review:
The first volume of a new series is just off the press. Those who have found inspiration in the author’s previous book, THE DIARY OF A CHILD OF SORROW, will gratefully welcome this series concerning the ancient Qabalah, which Madame Blavatsky said “is the key of the Sanctuary”, and that “it contains the quintessence of all philosophies, the light, life and wisdom of all ages and all generations.”
This volume is the substance of lectures read by the author before the Krotona Lodge during May and June of the present year. There are ten chapters and a closing Qabalistic Prayer.
Mr. Gewurz is a devoted scholar of this ancient wisdom of the Rabbis, and his book presents in a very attractive manner many of those “hidden treasures”, revealing much of that gold of wisdom and spiritual wealth which have been sacredly garnered for ages.
