The Dweller on the Threshold is a character in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1842 novel Zanoni. It is a malevolent entity, or astral shell, embodying all the darkness that an individual has accumulated during all past lives. The term is also described by T. Subba Row as a psychological trial threatening the progress of a person on a spiritual path.
