The Winter Solstice takes place this year on December 21st. This is the day when the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest period of daylight, and the longest night. After the solstice the days begin to lengthen, so this event is celebrated worldwide with festivals of light such as Hanukkah and Diwali.
The New Year is celebrated on January 1 in cultures that use the Gregorian Calendar. In the Theosophical view, the time of the new year coincides with a season in which the subtle energies of the Earth begin to grow stronger at the end of December, following the Winter Solstice.
